Codrington v St. Louis

#W91-212 | Location: Ypsilanti | Court Level: Federal | Settlement: $15,000

Categories: Race, Rental
Tags: African American, Black

The Codringtons, a Black family, attempted to rent a three-bedroom house in Ypsilanti Township for themselves and their three children.  The owner- Helen St. Louis of Ann Arbor- told them she did not want to rent to a family of five. The Codringtons contacted the Fair Housing Center and an investigation was conducted. Testing evidence supported their claims of race discrimination. The owner told a white FHC tester with the same size family, that she could rent the house. The case was filed in Federal Court by FHC Cooperating Attorney Douglas Mullkoff.
