Jefferies v. Van Rooy, Huron Ridge

#W22-048 | Location: Ypsilanti | Court Level: Federal | Settlement: Non-disclosed

Categories: Criminal Background, Litigation, Race, Rental

Damarkus Jefferies contacted the FHC to report being denied an apartment at Huron Heights/Huron Ridge Apartments
in Ypsilanti Township. Testing supported the allegation that Mr. Jefferies, a Black man, was denied because he had a
felony on his record. HUD guidelines from 2016 prohibit case updates housing providers from having blanket “no felony” policies.

The lawsuit was filed on December 28, 2022, in the U.S. Federal District Court in the Eastern District of Michigan by FHC Cooperating Attorney Francyne Stacey. The case was assigned to the Honorable Judith E. Levy.
